Spectrum moves into Turkey with acquisition of DesTek Elektronik |
 |
|
1st February 2008: The Spectrum Electronics Group, a leading pan European technology sales, marketing & operations company, has announced its acquisition of Istanbul based DesTek Elektronik www.destekelektronik.com |
 |
|
Founded in 2003, DesTek Elektronik has established an enviable reputation as a design-win focussed, electronic component sales and marketing company in Turkey, representing amongst other manufacturers; Cypress Semiconductor, Dialight, Diodes, MicroSemi and Teridian. |
 |
|
Announcing the successful conclusion of negotiations David Thomas, Spectrum’s Regional Director, Southern Europe said that the DesTek acquisition was an important step forward in Spectrum’s ambition to have a local operation in every technologically important country in Europe: “Turkey represents a very attractive growth market for the Spectrum Group, in particular consumer electronics (CE), which is one of Spectrum’s key market segments”, said Thomas. |
 |
|
The new operation, called Spectrum DesTek, will operate out of the existing offices in Kadiköy, Istanbul. The established team of two senior account managers and two FAEs will continue to be headed by DesTek founder Ercüment Yagmur. |
 |
|
According to Yagmur, Spectrum DesTek will continue to focus on the Tier 1 European consumer and white good manufacturers such as Vestel, Beko and Arcelik, who have major manufacturing operations in Turkey, and on the local OEMs active in the fields of metering, communications and military electronics: “It’s our mission to present our customers and our potential customers with the most effective solution offered by the manufacturers we represent”, Yagmur said. |
 |
|
“The DesTek and Spectrum operations share a fundamentally similar business model and already have a number of key lines in common”, continued Thomas. “This is an ideal M&A for the Spectrum Group as it adds value to both parties in the deal as well as the suppliers they represent and the customers they serve”. |

Spectrum launches Silicon Design |
 |
|
- I.S.M.O business model extended to include new pan-European Rep/Stockist |
 |
|
May 20th 2007: Spectrum Group International (SGI) has formally launched its latest pan-European operation. Operating as a pan-European Rep/Stockist, Silicon Design www.silicondesigneu.com further extends the Spectrum international sales, marketing & operations (I.S.M.O.) model it pioneered in 1994: According to SGI managing director Nigel Watts there are two main thrusts to Silicon Design's business: |
 |
|
“Like every Spectrum Group operation Silicon Design’s main purpose is the creation and enhancement of 'Institutional Relationships' on behalf of its manufacturing partners in key European OEM/CEM accounts. Silicon Design’s initial manufacturing partners could be described as breaking out of their start-up phase and have much to offer European OEMs active in the security, imaging, cockpit automotive and white goods markets. These manufacturers need to make their product readily available to OEMs but don’t yet have the kind of volumes that make them attractive to distributors. For this reason Silicon Design also operates a B2B fulfilment website to provide its partners with an efficient and cost-effective method for customers to source prototype and production quantities of the products they need”. |
 |
|
The Silicon Design team, all experienced electronics sales, marketing, and engineering professionals are able to leverage the local intelligence and infrastructure of seven Spectrum Electronic Group’s European offices. Currently located in UK, France, Germany, Iberia, Italy and the Nordic and Benelux regions, Silicon Design has plans to establish further local presences as the opportunities arise. |
 |
| |
Currently Silicon Design is partnered with four manufacturers;: California Micro Devices, Cyan Technology, eSilicon and Intellasys. Agreements with further partners are pending. For details of Silicon Design partners please visit www.silicondesigneu.com/manufacturers.htm

Spectrum
Electronics closes the loop with its new Retail operation |
 |
|
June
2006: For twelve years Spectrum Electronics has directed it's independent sales,
marketing and operations (I.S.M.O.) services towards OEMs on behalf of manufacturers
of electronic components. Now the Company has moved to close the circle by establishing
a market development operation to take its OEM customers' end
products to the retail market. |
 |
|
To
head the new SpecR (Spectrum-Retail) operation Spectrum has recruited industry
stalwart Patrick Frizoni. Frizoni has 30 years experience in both the components
and systems distribution channels, most recently as head of Avnet’s Far
Eastern operations. According to Frizoni SpecR has
already partnered with Better Energy Systems www.betterenergy.co.uk . “We’re charged with developing
the retail market for Better Energy’s innovative Solio universal battery
charger for hand-held devices”. |
 |
|
Solio
is a portable, high-performance and very neat power source that draws energy
from sunlight and stores it in an internal battery. “It will charge virtually
all mobile electronic devices at speeds akin to mains-powered chargers”,
said Frizoni. |
 |
|
Solio
owners can protect their charger inside a tailored Treadä case, manufactured
from recycled Columbian lorry tyres. Treadä accessories are also available
to fit a variety of hand-held electronics, such as the Nano, iPod, Powerbook
and MacBook: “There is a growing demand for Green accessories as conscientious
consumers seek to offset the environmental impact of their hand-held electronic
devices”, said Frizoni. “SpecR is also pursuing retail opportunities
for Better Energy Systems in this areana.” |
 |
| |
Frizoni
remains mindful of Spectrum Electronics’ components pedigree: “SpecR,
is also positioned and ready to exploit opportunities that will occur if and
when any of Spectrum’s existing partners decide to offer their components
through the retail channel”, he said.

New
Spectrum B2B website sows seeds for distribution’s future harvest |
 |
|
May
2006: Spectrum Electronics Group has launched a business-to-business website
to service customers' initial requirements for new and innovative products. |
 |
|
According
to Nigel Watts, Group Managing Director Spectrum Electronics, emerging manufacturers
are finding it increasingly difficult to find willing distribution channel partners
to service the low- volume/low-value shipments that are essential if customers
are to complete the design-in phase of their products: “Spectrum already
provides a broad range of representation services on behalf of these manufacturers,
so establishing ISMOSYS www.ismosys.com to plug this fulfilment gap was a logical
and essential step”. |
 |
|
The
functionality of ISMOSYS enables customers to select and order their requirements
on-line, choose their delivery method and pay with any credit or debit card.
The site also offers a credit account option for returning customers. Products
currently available on ISMOSYS are the Cavium range of H.P. compatible Network
Accelerator cards and the innovative Sendero image processing evaluation kit
developed by AleaREP BV. |
 |
|
ISMOSYS
is complementary to Spectrum’s independent sales, marketing & operations
(I.S.M.O.) business model: “Market development and customer support is
a vital part of the service we offer our IP partners”, said Watts. “In
addition to being an efficient way to service customers’ initial requirements
ISMOSYS.com enables us to monitor and assist customers with their integration
of new technology products”. Once the manufacturer deems that sales volumes
require specialist distribution services Spectrum simply hands over the sales
history and backlog to the chosen distribution partners: “At this point
we revert to our core role of manufacturers’ representative and continue
our market expansion activities in harness with the distributor(s)”, Watts
said.

Spectrum
Group Investment Team Headed by Dick Skipworth |
 |
|
- Memec founder comes full circle to back
expansion of Spectrum’s I.S.M.O. model |
 |
|
Tuesday
May 16th, 2006: Dick Skipworth, widely acknowledged as a leading pioneer
in the field of technology distribution, has thrown his considerable industry
weight behind the Spectrum Group of independent sales, marketing & operations
(I.S.M.O.) companies. |
 |
|
According
to M.D. Nigel Watts, Skipworth has made a significant strategic investment in
Spectrum, empowering the Group to accelerate its ambitious road map for geographic
and value-added service expansion: “Dick will also provide invaluable,
multi-level support and advice to the Group as it faces the double challenge
of geographic expansion and organic growth”, said Watts. |
 |
|
Commenting
on the announcement Skipworth iterated his belief in the Spectrum I.S.M.O. model: “When
I founded Memec in 1974 I realised that success was dependent as much on innovation
as it was on hard work and in today’s mature electronics market it’s
much harder to be really different. I’m very impressed by Spectrum’s
vision and commitment”. |
 |
|
At
the same time Watts announced two further non-executive additions to the board,
Steve Poole, ex-VP of Europe for Intel and ex-Memec C.F.O. Colin Stevens: “Steve
and Colin have provided invaluable professional advice to Spectrum in the recent
past and their investment in Spectrum is a further endorsement of their commitment
to the Company”, said Watts. Poole will head the new Spectrum board in
the capacity of non-executive chairman. |
 |
| |
Spectrum’s
I.S.M.O. model provides a unique growth vehicle for US- and Asian-based technological
companies seeking to achieve their full potential in European markets. The Group
has fostered close working relationships with customers, manufacturers and distributors
throughout the European electronics market but expansion into other international
territories such as North America and the Far East is pivotal to the achievement
of its ambitions. “We have developed a wide range of services and expertise
that complement our partners' existing infrastructures but there is still a lot
more we can offer in every major technological market”, said Watts. He
promised further announcements concerning the expansion of the Group’s
territory coverage and service offering in the near future: “This is indeed
a very exciting time for the Spectrum Group and its people”, concluded
Watts.
